"25 Years After Chernobyl"
"Paths towards a Culture of Transnational Remembrance"
A Project of the Association for International Education and Exchange Dortmund (IBB) and the Mercator Foundation in cooperation with EUSTORY, Hamburg and the IBB „Johannes Rau“ Minsk

What was the first country that published the news about the accident and the radioactive cloud? What kind of solidarity initiatives followed and how did the energy / environment policy change in Europe? How is the event taught in school and what do the people really now about what happened in Chernobyl 25 years ago? Even 25 years after the nuclear catastrophe in Chernobyl, many questions still remain open. Between September 2010 and March 2011 EUSTORY alumni try to close some gaps in the history of the accident. 61 young Europeans from Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine and Wales are researching about the reaction tot he accident in their countries. In a virtual classroom they present the results of monthly assignment and discuss with each other. In April 2011 all participants will meet „in reality“ in Berlin in order to form an exhibition out of their research material. This exhibition will be presented during a public event on 26th April in the French Dome in Berlin, together with other presentations from the cooperation partners oft he project "25 Years After Chernobyl" - "Paths towards a Culture of Transnational Remembrance". This project is organized by EUSTORY in cooperation with the IBB Dortmund / IBB Minsk and financed by the Mercator Foundation.

"Multicultural History"

Nova Doba
History in the contemporary political situation in Ukraine is often used as a manipulation object. Right and left-winged politicians advocate increasing the amount of national history in the curriculum, the change in national narrative represented in school history in such a way that the victimized image of the nation, heroic epochs, dominant ethnic communities and religious denominations are given prominent emphasis. Having these problems in mind, the Ukranian member organisation 'Nova Doba' developed the project Multicultural History of Ukraine. The main goal of the project is to facilitate a public discussion on reconsidering the role of history in the post-communist society, and to identify new opportunities for building a multicultural image of the Ukrainian society based on the European democratic approach to education.
The project is supposed to last 24 months. The objectives of the project will be achieved in several steps and events in the course of the action, such as training seminars in which at least 75 trainers will be trained to hold follow-up workshops for Ukrainian educators in project regions on the developed materials and methodology of textbook Multicultural History; a series of local seminars for teachers and students. Prepared trainers on the dissemination stage will hold seminars in different regions of Ukraine on the base of oblast in-service teacher training institutes on the voluntary base; an Online Program that will support training teachers in the framework of series of local seminars in methodological approaches of multicultural education or a final Symposium will provide a podium for a wide public presentation of the project results and dissemination of its results for the educators from all regions of Ukraine and national mass media. In July a summer school took place near Lviv under the topic "Preparation of young teachers and pedagogical university students of Ukraine for practical application of innovative methods in civic education".
Link Tip: EU Scholarships for the Western Balkans
The Scholarship Database is an online search engine for all Western Balkan students and researchers who would like to study in EU member states and EFTA countries and are looking for financial aid. The Scholarship Database contains information on a range of scholarships for Western Balkan students and researchers.
Higher education and science will play a crucial role for Western Balkan countries in their accession to and association with the European Union (EU). The transition of these countries – many of them new states on their way towards market oriented democracies with strong civil societies – will require a highly qualified workforce and a changed mindset of the population, which needs to develop a new sense of belonging and a spirit of ownership and responsibility. Education will be key in developing the resources available to contribute to the integration of local higher education systems into the European Higher Education Area. Increasing both the interest of students from the Western Balkans in studying abroad and the EU to support these students to do so is an integral part of the process. A study initiated by the King Baudouin Foundation, 'Student mobility in Western Balkan countries' highlighted the key problems that exist with Western Balkan student mobility into EU member state and EFTA countries. Of the students interviewed that would not consider study abroad, 51% cited insufficient money as a very important reason. Similarly, even when students were considering studying abroad, 62.4% answered that not finding enough money was a big problem. Considering these problems, the scholarship database contains information on a range of scholarships for Western Balkan students and researchers in European Union Member States and EFTA countries.
