Unruhige Zeiten. Lebensgeschichten aus Russland und Deutschland [Times of Unrest. Russian and German Life Stories]

The First World War and the October Revolution, Hitler's seizure of power, Stalin's purge trials, the battles of the Second World War, the Iron Curtain - these dates and facts of German-Russian history are well known. But how did people live through these times of unrest? How did Germans and Russians face each other in the course of the 20th century and to what extend do these experiences still influence their coexistence today?
Youth from Russia and from Germany interview eye witnesses, undertake research in archives and explore their immediate surroundings. They reveal everyday life in times of unrest and of fear, speak about how individuals survived deportation, forced labor and terror. But they show as well the peaceful living together of Russians and Germans, friendship, mutual support and courage. In the framework of their national history competitions, run by MEMORIAL in Moscow and the Körber Foundation in Hamburg, students relate forgotten life stories. They represent a vivid mosaic of the ambivalent relationship between both countries and may serve at the same time as a proof that a young generation of Russians and Germans wishes to live in harmony with each other.
